COCKATIEL BIRD CAGE

There are several considerations when buying a cockatiel bird cage.

In this section you will learn the different requirements needed.  For instance, what size bird cage does a cockatiel need?  Where to place the bird cage?  How to clean the bird cage?  What toys does your cockatiel need?    Following are the answers to many questions.

What size bird cage does a cockatiel need?

When thinking about what size bird cage does a cockatiel need you must consider that this bird likes to fly.  The cockatiel should be able to flap his wings without touching the sides of the cage.

As the cockatiel will live for around 15-20 years, it is advisable to get a bird cage that is well made.  A metal cage with non toxic paint is recommended.   It will need a sturdy lock as these cheeky birds may try and escape.

The cockatiel is an intelligent and curious bird.  Therefore, they will require enough space in their cage for toys and accessories.

Your bird will be spending most of their lives inside this cage so it needs to be large but cosy.

The cage should provide room for horizontal exercise and vertical climbing.  A minimum of 24″x 18″x 30″ with ½ to 1 inch bar spacing is the recommended cage size for Cockatiels.

Where to place the cockatiel bird cage?

When I consider where to place the cockatiel bird cage, I like to put them in a place where they’ll get to interact with people.  You also don’t want too much of a disturbance at the same time…in case they talk non-stop!

Put the cage at eye level to create a sense of security for your bird.   They would sit in a higher location naturally in the wild.

Avoid placing the cage near dangerous fumes, like gas heaters, as this might kill them.   Drafts will also create problems.

Do not place the bird cage directly by a window because the sun can cause your cockatiel to overheat.  If it helps, find a shade cloth for your window, so that your bird may get just the right amount of heat during the day and feel comfortable during the night.

A corner of your lounge room or dining room may be the ideal spot.

How to clean the cockatiel bird cage?

Knowing how to clean the cockatiel bird cage is very important.  Cockatiels are proud, clean birds.  They like to clean and preen themselves and like to live in a clean area.

The cleanliness of your cockatiel’s cage could affect his health.  Therefore, it is very important that you check it daily for any dirt, like faeces and spoiled food left in perches.

Caring for your cockatiel means you should also change the cage paper every other day.  Check the metal parts & bars of your bird’s cage periodically for chipped paint and rust because your bird will most likely chew or swallow the flaked pieces.

You should clean the cage thoroughly at least once every month.  You could use a mild dish washing liquid or bleach with warm water.  Rinse all soap and bleach off thoroughly with water before letting your bird back inside the cage.
